Evidence for Stellar Streaming in the Cores of Elliptical Galaxies: A Kinematic Signature of Mergers?
We present evidence for non-Gaussian velocity fields within the cores of
luminous elliptical galaxies. This evidence is based upon high signal-to-noise,
medium-resolution spectroscopy of the cores of early-type members of the Virgo
and Coma clusters obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. The Virgo data were
acquired using an integral-field unit (DensePak) allowing the velocity field to
be sampled over a variety of spatial scales. The Coma data were obtained
through single, 2-arcsec diameter fibers. The cross-correlation profiles of
luminous ellipticals show considerable structure, often having several features
with amplitudes as high as 10% that of the cross-correlation peak itself. This
structure is most obvious within a radius of 1.5 arcsec (at Virgo), or < 100
pc, and is nearly undetectable when the data are binned over R < 15 arcsec, or
< 1 kpc. Similar features are found in the single-fiber spectra of the luminous
ellipticals in the Coma Cluster suggesting they are ubiquitous to giant
ellipticals. Interesting, only the most luminous elliptical galaxies show this
phenomena; the central regions of lower luminosity ellipticals have regular,
Gaussian-like profiles. We interpret this kinematic structure as ``stellar
streaming'' and suggest that this phenomena could be a relic signature of the
merger history of luminous elliptical galaxies.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, 2 figure
Radiative transition rates and collision strengths for Si II
Aims. This work reports radiative transition rates and electron impact
excitation collision strengths for levels of the 3s23p, 3s3p2, 3s24s, and 3s23d
configurations of Siii. Methods. The radiative data were computed using the
Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-Amaldi central potential, but with the modifications
introduced by Bautista (2008) that account for the effects of electron-electron
interactions. We also introduce new schemes for the optimization of the
variational parameters of the potential. Additional calculations were carried
out with the Relativistic Hartree-Fock and the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock
methods. Collision strengths in LS-coupling were calculated in the close
coupling approximation with the R-matrix method. Then, fine structure collision
strengths were obtained by means of the intermediate-coupling frame
transformation (ICFT) method which accounts for spin-orbit coupling effects.
Results. We present extensive comparisons between the results of different
approximations and with the most recent calculations and experiment available
in the literature. From these comparisons we derive a recommended set of gf-
values and radiative transition rates with their corresponding estimated
uncertainties. We also study the effects of different approximations in the
representation of the target ion on the electron-impact collision strengths.
Our most accurate set of collision strengths were integrated over a Maxwellian
distribution of electron energies and the resulting effective collision
strengths are given for a wide range of temperatures. Our results present
significant differences from recent calculations with the B-spline
non-orthogonal R-matrix method. We discuss the sources of the differences.Comment: 6 figures, 5 tables within text, 2 electronic table
Atomic data from the IRON Project. I. Electron-impact scattering of Fe17+ using <I>R</I>-matrix theory with intermediate coupling
We present results for electron-impact excitation of F-like Fe calculated using R-matrix theory where an intermediate-coupling frame transformation (ICFT) is used to obtain level-resolved collision strengths. Two such calculations are performed, the first expands the target using 2s2 2p5, 2s 2p6, 2s2 2p4 3l, 2s 2p5 3l, and 2p6 3l configurations while the second calculation includes the 2s2 2p4 4l, 2s 2p5 4l, and 2p6 4l configurations as well. The effect of the additional structure in the latter calculation on the n=3 resonances is explored and compared with previous calculations. We find strong resonant enhancement of the effective collision strengths to the 2s2 2p4 3s levels. A comparison with a Chandra X-ray observation of Capella shows that the n=4 R-matrix calculation leads to good agreement with observation</p
The influence of electron collisions on non-LTE Li line formation in stellar atmospheres
The influence of the uncertainties in the rate coefficient data for
electron-impact excitation and ionization on non-LTE Li line formation in cool
stellar atmospheres is investigated. We examine the electron collision data
used in previous non-LTE calculations and compare them to recent calculations
that use convergent close-coupling (CCC) techniques and to our own calculations
using the R-matrix with pseudostates (RMPS) method. We find excellent agreement
between rate coefficients from the CCC and RMPS calculations, and reasonable
agreement between these data and the semi-empirical data used in non-LTE
calculations up to now. The results of non-LTE calculations using the old and
new data sets are compared and only small differences found: about 0.01 dex (~
2%) or less in the abundance corrections. We therefore conclude that the
influence on non-LTE calculations of uncertainties in the electron collision
data is negligible. Indeed, together with the collision data for the charge
exchange process Li(3s) + H Li^+ + H^- now available, and barring the
existence of an unknown important collisional process, the collisional data in
general is not a source of significant uncertainty in non-LTE Li line formation

Relativistic photoionization cross sections for C II
High resolution measurements of photoionization cross sections for atomic
ions are now being made on synchrotron radiation sources. The recent
measurements by Kjeldsen etal. (1999) showed good agreement between the
observed resonance features and the the theoretical calculations in the close
coupling approximation (Nahar 1995). However, there were several observed
resonances that were missing in the theoretical predictions. The earlier
theoretical calculation was carried out in LS coupling where the relativistic
effects were not included. Present work reports photoionization cross sections
including the relativistic effects in Breit-Pauli R-matrix (BPRM)
approximation. The configuration interaction eigenfunction expansion for the
core ion C III consists of 20 fine structure levels dominated by the
configurations from 1s^22s^2 to 1s^22s3d. Detailed features in the calculated
cross sections exhibit the missing resonances due to fine structure. The
results benchmark the accuracy of BPRM photoionization cross sections as needed
for recent and ongoing experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
A matter of culture and cost? A comparison of the employment decisions made by mothers with a lower, intermediate and higher level of education in the Netherlands.
This article is focused on financial-economic and socio-cultural factors in explaining differences in labour participation and working hours of Dutch mothers with diverging educational levels. The data used are taken from a survey held among approximately 1700 women in the Netherlands from two-parent households with children up to 12 years old. The models for participation and working hours are simultaneously estimated for different levels of education. It is found that socio-cultural factors have slightly more impact on the employment decisions of lower educated mothers compared to their higher educated counterparts, although the differences are only minor. Despite the level of education, socio-cultural factors appear to be more important in mothers' employment decisions than financial-economic factors. In addition, both factors are better predictors for mothers' decisions to participate than for their number of working hours; demographic variables are found to be the most important predictor for mothers' working hours. © The Author(s) 2011
N-acetyltransferase 2 and bladder cancer: an overview and consideration of the evidence for gene–environment interaction
Genetic polymorphism of the carcinogen metabolizing enzyme N -acetyl transferase 2 (NAT2) may influence susceptibility to bladder cancers related to smoking or to occupational exposure to arylamine carcinogens. This article reviews the results of 21 published case–control studies of NAT2 polymorphism and bladder-cancer risk, with a total of 2700 cases and 3426 controls. The published evidence suggests that NAT2 slow acetylator phenotype or genotype may be associated with a small increase in bladder cancer risk. However, given the possibility of selective publication of results from studies that found an excess risk, the current evidence is not sufficient to conclude that there is a real increase in risk. Only five of the 21 studies reported results separately for the effect of NAT2 on bladder cancer risk in smokers and non-smokers. Although the results suggest that the effect may be greater in smokers than in non-smokers, the possibility of publication bias makes these results difficult to interpret. There was insufficient evidence to assess the joint effect of NAT2 and occupational exposure to arylamines on bladder cancer risk. Even if estimates of the effect of NAT2 from published data are correct, studies with around 3000–5000 cases will be needed to confirm them. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Early antibiotic use and incidence of necrotising enterocolitis in very preterm infants: a protocol for a UK based observational study using routinely recorded data
Introduction Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) remains a major contributor to preterm mortality and morbidity. Prolonged duration of antibiotic therapy after delivery is associated with later NEC development but recent evidence suggests that absence of antibiotic treatment after delivery may also increase NEC risk. We will explore this controversy using a large pre-existing dataset of preterm infants in the UK. Methods and analysis: This is a retrospective cohort study using data from UK National Neonatal Research Database (NNRD) for infants born 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2020. Eligible infants will be <32 weeks gestation, alive on day 3. Primary outcome is development of severe NEC, compared in infants receiving early antibiotics (days 1–2 after birth) and those not. Subgroup analysis on duration of early antibiotic exposure will also occur. Secondary outcomes are: late onset sepsis, total antibiotic use, predischarge mortality, retinopathy of prematurity, intraventricular haemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, focal intestinal perforation and any abdominal surgery. To address competing risks, incidence of death before day 7, 14 and 28 will be analysed. We will perform logistic regression and propensity score matched analyses. Statistical analyses will be guided by NEC risk factors, exposures and outcome presented in a causal diagram. These covariates include but are not limited to gestational age, birth weight, small for gestational age, sex, ethnicity, delivery mode, delivery without labour, Apgar score, early feeding and probiotic use. Sensitivity analyses of alternate NEC definitions, specific antibiotics and time of initiation will occur. Ethics and dissemination: We will use deidentified data from NNRD, which holds permissions for the original data, from which parents can opt out and seek study-specific research ethics approval. The results will help to determine optimal use of early antibiotics for very preterm infants. Implications: This data will help optimise early antibiotic use in preterm infants.
